First Results on Facial Feature Segmentation and Recognition using Graph Homomorphisms

A new method for segmenting facial feature regions (e.g. eyebrows, iris, lips, nostrils, ...), in images and video sequences based on graph homomorphisms is introduced in this paper. Firstly, we apply a recently proposed technique based on Gabor Wavelet Networks (GWN) to obtain an approximate location of the facial feature regions in the image. The image is then oversegmented using the watershed algorithm, and attributes of regions and of spatial relationships between regions are computed. The resulting oversegmented image is represented by an attributed relational graph, which is matched against a model graph through a homomorphism. Some preliminary results using real video sequences are presented.
